The final release in the Royal Mint's 2020 Tower of London series looks at the Tower's role as an 'Infamous Prison'. London's most famous castle can trace its roots back to the 11th century during the reign of William the Conquerer, with many alterations and extensions made during the mediaeval era. Although the castle has served as a prison during its 800-year existence, it never had its primary purpose as a gaol. It reached its height as a prison in the 16th and 17th centuries, with many high-profile figures who had fallen into disgrace 'sent to the tower'. Torture was used, but had to be approved by the Privy Council, so its application was not as widespread as urban legend would suggest. Famous prisoners incarcerated in the Tower over the years included Elizabeth Tudor, Guy Fawkes, Roger Casement and Rudolf Hess. For the reverse, Timothy Noad's design for this cupronickel coin is a subtle evocation of the Tower's chilling past. It's inspired by anonymous graffiti found in the Bell Tower which reads 'BY TORTURE STRANGE MY TROUTH WAS TRIED YET OF MY LIBERTIE DENIED'. This is set against a Norman-style window: a design feature that unifies the coins in the 2020 Tower of London collection. On the obverse of this pre-owned coin is the fifth official UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen, as engraved by Jody Clark. Your cupro-nickel £5 coin weighs 28.28 grams, measures 38.61 millimetres in diameter and is struck twice to give it a brilliant uncirculated finish. It's housed in an officially approved Royal Mint coin sleeve, which is the official limited edition packaging.
