Brilliant uncirculated 'strike on the day' Sovereign, issued to mark the birth of Prince George, the first child of Prince William and Princess Catherine. Prince George was born on the 22nd July 2013 and 2,013 Sovereigns were specially struck on this date to celebrate the occasion, which was the first royal birth to be celebrated on commemorative coinage from the UK's national mint. From birth, George was third in line to the British throne, behind his grandfather, Prince Charles (now King), and his father, Prince William. With the passing of his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, he became the second in line to the throne. The Queen's effigy appears on the obverse of this pre-owned coin, which is the fourth official UK coin engraving of Her Majesty and was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The reverse shows the classic and very appropriate image of Saint George and the dragon, a design crafted for the first gold Sovereigns, minted in 1817. In it, England's patron saint and the Prince's namesake slays a winged dragon from his position on a rearing horse. Unlike normal bullion Sovereigns, this 'Struck on the Day' Sovereign has a superior appearance, being struck twice during production to give a sharper, brilliant uncirculated finish. This pre-owned coin does have exactly the same specification as other Sovereigns: 7.98 grams of 22 carat gold and a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. This gives the coin a fine gold weight of 0.2354 troy ounces. Your highly collectable Sovereign is offered in its original white leather presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity inside.
