The seventh bullion coin release in The Royal Mint's popular Queen's Beasts series is the Yale of Beaufort, a mythical animal said to have the tusks and horns of a boar and to be the size of an elephant. The idea for this coin series came from the 10 heraldic statues present at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The yale was first mentioned by the Roman author Pliny the Elder in his influential literary collection titled 'Natural History' (Naturalis Historia). It descends to Elizabeth II through King Henry VII, who inherited it from his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort. Her position as matriarch of the Tudor dynasty gave the yale prestige and symbolic meaning. On the coin's reverse, the goat-bodied yale is seen propping up a shield with a crowned portcullis on it. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II, facing right in her fifth definitive UK coin portrait. Both sides of this 24 carat gold coin were designed by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, who has placed his own unique stamp on the Queen's Beasts coin series. Specifications are a total weight of 7.81 grams, a diameter of 22.00 millimetres and a fine gold weight of 0.25 troy ounces. There may be some superficial production marks on the coin, which is perfectly normal for bullion coins and doesn't take away from their value.
