The sixth release in the Royal Mint's popular Queen's Beasts coin series is the Falcon of the Plantagenets, with this edition being the gold 1/4oz bullion coin. The Queen's Beasts are a set of ten statues guarding the entrance to Westminster Abbey which were created for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. James Woodford RA was responsible for the design of each statue, and engraver Jody Clark has created modern interpretations of the statues on each coin in the series. The reverse on this collectable gold coin shows the falcon in all its glory with a chainmail textured background. The falcon was first used by King Edward III in the 14th century, but the shield that the falcon is clutching on this coin represents the personal badge of King Edward IV. Hunting with birds of prey was an elite sport in medieval England, so choosing this beast as a personal emblem highlighted prowess and nobility. Clark has also designed the obverse of this UK coin, which depicts the official fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin has a diameter of 22.00 millimetres, weighs a total 7.81 grams and is struck in 24 carat gold to a uncirculated billion finish. For added protection, this pre-owned coin is housed in either a capsule or a sleeve. There may be some superficial production marks on the coin, which is perfectly normal for mass-produced coins and doesn't take away from their bullion or collector's value. Each coin is supplied in protective packaging to preserve its uncirculated finish.
