2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof
The third release in The Royal Mint’s 2019 Tower of London collection, this Silver Proof Five Pound coin is a celebration of the Yeoman Warders or Beefeaters.
The 2019 Tower of London Collection
The Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof is the third of four coins, released as part of an exciting 2019 collaboration between The Royal Mint and Historic Royal Palaces. The collection is the first time that the Tower of London has been celebrated on official UK coinage.
Designs issued in 2019 included: The Ceremony of the Keys, The Crown Jewels, the Legend of the Ravens and The Yeoman Warders. Coins in this collectible series have been issued in Silver Proof - like this example - as well as Brilliant Uncirculated and Gold Proof editions.
Glyn Davies’ Historic Reverse
The reverse of the 2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof is the work of Glyn Davies: a designer whose work has featured on a number of The Royal Mint coins. Previous works include the 2017 Sapphire Jubilee £5 and the 2015 Remembrance Day Alderney £5.
Like all of Davies’ designs for the 2019 Tower of London collection, the reverse of The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof coin features part of an architectural plan of the Tower. When viewed together, the four coins in the series show a full map of the historic fortress.
The Tower’s Traditional Guardians
Davies design for the 2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof shows a Yeoman Warder, carrying a ceremonial axe.
Better known as Beefeaters, the Yeoman Warders are the traditional guardians of the Tower of London. Historically, they guarded prisoners and the crown jewels. Today, their role includes greeting visitors to the Tower.
All Beefeaters are former members of the armed forces and are instantly recognisable by their distinctive uniform. The subject of this 2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof wears Tudor State Dress, decorated with national floral emblems.
On Into Twilight Within Walls of Stone
The edge of the 2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof bears an intriguing inscription:
'ON INTO TWILIGHT WITHIN WALLS OF STONE’
This is a line from 'Human Life’ by English poet Samuel Rogers, first published in 1819. The anonymous subject of Roger’s poem is cast as a traitor and imprisoned in the Tower of London like many before him. The inscription is a chilling reminder of the Tower’s historic role as a prison.
A Silver Proof Five Pound Coin
The obverse of the 2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof shows Jody Clark’s definitive portrait of Elizabeth II, in use on UK coinage since 2015. This commemorative coin is legal tender and Capital Gains Tax free with a face value of Five Pounds.
Struck from 28.28 grams of .925 Sterling Silver, this 2019 Tower of London The Yeoman Warders £5 Silver Proof coin is finished to Proof standard. That means that you can enjoy Glyn Davies Yeoman Warders design as it was meant to be viewed.
