The fifth proof release in the sought-after Queen’s Beasts series, struck in 1oz of 999 silver. The falcon is a beast associated with the House of York, particularly Plantagenet King Edward IV who claimed his throne during the Wars of the Roses. It’s his badge, showing a Falcon perched atop a fetterlock - a kind of shackle - that appears on this Queen’s Beasts coin. Hunting with birds of prey was an elite sport in medieval England, so choosing this beast as a personal emblem suggested nobility and prowess. The falcon, wings outstretched, clutches Edward IV’s badge with its talons in this design, its head dividing the date. Like all the beasts in this series, the falcon of the Plantagenets is the work of Royal Mint designer, Jody Clark. He has the unusual distinction of his work featuring on both sides of these coins as he is also the artist behind the fifth official effigy of Her Majesty the Queen, introduced in 2015. This edition has a face value of £2 and is struck in 31.21 grams of 999 fine silver. Finished to proof standard it has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and is offered in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint. It’s one of just 5,500 issued.
