The Battle of Waterloo (1815) was one of the most decisive in history, bringing peace in Europe after twenty years of war. To mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle, The Royal Mint released a series of commemorative coins, including this silver proof Five Pound. It depicts the Duke of Wellington shaking hands with General Blucher of Prussia. Although Wellington’s army was relatively inexperienced, he used strategy and the landscape to his advantage, working alongside the tenacious Blucher to prevent the expansion of Napoleon’s desired European Empire. Wellington’s description of the Battle inscribes the coin’s edge: ‘THE NEAREST RUN THING YOU EVER SAW.’ A new tradition was born from the Battle: the presentation of medals to any soldier who took part. Over 37,000 Waterloo Medals were produced by The Royal Mint. Sculptor, designer, artist, and illustrator David Lawrence designed the scene on the Crown’s reverse, and was greatly inspired by Daniel Maclise’s 1815 painting in the House of Lords which similarly shows the victorious handshake between Wellington and Blucher, recognising the sometimes unsung General. Between the two leaders are casualties and weaponry, a reminder of the enormous cost of war. The £5 coin’s obverse displays Jody Clark’s 2015 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the fifth effigy in circulation. In .925 sterling silver and weighing 28.28 grams, the crown comes in its original box with a numbered certificate of authenticity. 2,523 have been issued with the Clark portrait, while others feature the earlier portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley.
