Limited edition 200th anniversary Battle of Waterloo silver proof £5 coin from The Royal Mint. The Battle of Waterloo redrew the map of Europe and marked the beginning of a period of peace and prosperity known as the Pax Britannica. Despite this, the battle was hard won, with the Duke of Wellington calling it 'the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life' - a quote which appears on the edge of this sterling silver collectors coin. The reverse, designed by David Lawrence, shows Wellington and his Prussian counterpart, Marshal Blücher, shaking hands on the battlefield. Their allied coalition won the historic victory over Napoleon Bonaparte's French forces. This pre-owned coin features Jody Clark's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which first started appearing on circulating UK coins this year. Similar Battle of Waterloo coins were also issued with Ian Rank-Broadley's royal portrait.
