2014 marked seventy years since the Normandy landings, more commonly known as D-Day. The biggest seaborn invasion in history, it laid the foundations for the the Allied liberation of Western Europe. To commemorate this important anniversary, The Royal Mint issued this Alderney £5 silver proof coin, featuring a reverse by engraver Lee R Jones. The design shows two British soldiers wading through the shallows from their landing craft with the names of the five landing beaches, plus Pointe du Hoc. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Elizabeth II. Struck in 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver, this coin is from a limited edition presentation of 1,944. Offered in its original packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
