To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Golden Guinea, a commemorative Two Pound Piedfort coin was released by The Royal Mint. First minted in 1663, under the reign of Charles II, the golden guinea was equivalent to twenty shillings, although this fluctuated with the price of gold. Its name was inspired by the Guinea coast in Africa, where the gold originated. From 1663 until the last guineas were minted in 1813, the design remained relatively stable, featuring the monarch’s head on the obverse, and a version of the Royal Coat of Arms on the reverse. The most popular format was ‘the spade-guinea’ used since 1787 and features the spade shaped shield fashionable during the eighteenth century. It is this design which artist Anthony Smith was inspired by for this anniversary Piedfort coin. Around the Royal Arms is a legend reading ‘ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLDEN GUINEA 2013’. The edge inscription is taken from a poem by nineteenth century poet Stephen Kemble: ‘WHAT IS A GUINEA? ’TIS A SPLENDID THING’. This double thickness £2 is struck in .925 sterling silver with a band of fine gold plating around the edge, and weighs 24.00 grams. It is presented here in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, with a detailed booklet describing the history, cultural legacy, and decline of the golden guinea. It also comes with the certificate of authenticity. Just 969 were issued in this presentation.
