His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge was born on 22 July 2013. Three months later, he was christened George Alexander Louis. In honour of his birth and christening, The Royal Mint released commemorative coins, including this silver proof Five Pound designed by John Bergdahl. The Prince’s arrival was historically significant as Queen Elizabeth II became the first reigning monarch in 120 years to welcome a great-grandchild destined to succeed the throne. Fittingly, the achievement was previously held by Queen Victoria who welcomed great-grandsons Edward VIII and George VI. For his christening, Prince George wore a christening robe first worn by Queen Victoria’s own daughter, Victoria, and so many royal children in the intervening years that a replica had to be constructed. The Lily Font was also commissioned by Queen Victoria for her eldest daughter. This Font inspired John Bergdahl’s design for the reverse of the coin, alongside two cherubs, and a crowned Baroque-style cartouche. The inscription reads ‘To celebrate the Christening of PRINCE GEORGE of CAMBRIDGE 2013.’ A ribbon along the bottom of the design displays the royal motto ‘DIEU ET MON DROIT’ (God and my right). The obverse shows the fourth official effigy of The Queen, by Ian Rank-Broadley. In the traditional 38.61 milimetres and weighing 28.28 grams, this 0.925 sterling silver coin was released in a limited issue of 7,264. It is offered in the original white box from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
