From the famous ‘Peter Grimes’ in 1945 to ‘War Requiem in 1962, musical artist Benjamin Britten’s works were considered the best English operas since the seventeenth century. Despite suffering ill health as a result of childhood pneumonia, he composed numerous masterpieces during his life and is sometimes said to have revived English opera. His legacy continues today with the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts taking place every year in the town where Britten and his partner, Peter Pears, lived for many years. To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Britten’s birth, The Royal Mint issued a special commemorative Fifty Pence in piedfort silver proof. Designed by artist and composer Tom Phillips, the reverse of the coin features a row of musical staves with ‘BENJAMIN BRITTEN. COMPOSER BORN 1913’ over the top. Lines from his works are featured above and below the lines of music: ‘BLOW BUGLE BLOW’ and ‘SET THE WILD ECHOES FLYING’. This striking design is paired on the obverse with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, the fourth official effigy to be used on circulating coinage. One of just 515, his double thickness 50p is comprised of .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 27.30 milimetres. It weighs 16.00 grams and is offered in its original presentation, a smart black box and white cardboard sleeve with certificate of authenticity.
