In 2011, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh celebrated his 90th birthday, making him the longest lived consort of any British monarch. To mark the occasion, The Royal Mint offered a collection of commemorative Five Pound coins, bearing a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen’s husband by sculptor Mark Richards. Its an unusual close-up portrait which shows the Prince facing right. The legend surrounding this on a narrow rim reads: ‘PRINCE PHILIP · 90TH BIRTHDAY · FIVE POUNDS · 2011’. Richard’s portrait mirrors the right-facing portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley which appears to the obverse. This extra-heavy piedfort Crown is struck in 56.56 grams of .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. It has a face value of £5 and is from a limited issue of only 2,695. You’ll receive your 2011 silver piedfort Prince Philip coin in its original box from The Royal Mint with its numbered certificate of authenticity.
