Famous for the low number released into circulation, the Kew Gardens Fifty Pence is the most sought after issue among 50p collectors. It was struck to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in Richmond-upon-Thames. The collection of exotic plants was started in 1759 and is today the worlds most extensive group of living and preserved specimens. It’s also one of London’s top tourist attractions. The history of Kew is celebrated on this renown coin with a depiction of the Garden’s Chinese Pagoda with a leafy vine twining around the tower and the anniversary dates: 1759 and 2009. Its a design by the British artist Christopher Le Brun RA. His instantly recognisable design is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen which appears on the obverse of original 2009 Kew Gardens coins. This portrait was used until 2015 and was replaced on later issues of the Kew Gardens 50p with Jody Clark’s effigy. This .925 silver example is finished to proof standard. The means it displays a higher level of detail that its circulating counterparts thanks to multiple strikes of hand-finished dies. Its also more exclusive. Only 3,663 were struck in silver proof in 2009 with a smaller number presented in their own case like this one which comes in its original packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
