This commemorative piedfort coin celebrates the sixtieth birthday of Prince Charles. The son of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles was born on 14 November 1948 and was invested as Prince of Wales in 1969 when he was 21. He is currently the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history. The reverse of this piece shows a right-facing portrait of the Prince with the inscription ‘THE PRINCE OF WALES’ above and the words ‘ICH DIEN’ below (‘I serve’ in German). The effigy is the work of sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley who also crafted the fourth official coinage portrait of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II which appears on the obverse of this .925 sterling silver coin. Edge inscription: ‘SIXTIETH BIRTHDAY’. Face value: Five Pounds. Total weight: 56.56 grams. Diameter: 38.61 millimetres. Offered in its original presentation box and capsule from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity confirming that this piece is from a limited edition presentation of 1,088.
