King Charles III celebrated his sixtieth birthday in 2008. Back then he was the Prince of Wales and the longest serving heir apparent in history. Charles made this role his own, taking on extensive charity work and championing important causes. Alongside founding The Princes Trust (which is celebrated on the commemorative Crown released for his fiftieth birthday), the Prince also acts as patron or president for around four hundred additional charities and organisations. He took an early interest in the issue of climate change and destruction of habitats and rainforests. This silver proof Five Pound was released by The Royal Mint to mark the Prince's birthday and comes in its original presentation packing from The Royal Mint. An enclosed booklet which doubles as a certificate of authenticity contains information about Charles' life and work. The coin's reverse shows a one-off portrait of the Prince by Ian Rank-Broadley, created especially for the coin. The same artist created the effigy on the coin's obverse of Her Majesty The Queen, Charles' mother. This portrait has been used on UK coins since 1998. This £5 Crown is struck in 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver to The Royal Mint's proof standard. Proof coins feature mirrored surfaces and frosted devices. They take serious craftsmanship to produce and are only offered in limited numbers. Just 6,264 of these coins have been issued in this presentation, made all the more collectible since the Prince acceded to the throne as King Charles III.
