Following series of One Pound coins representing the four Home Nations in flora and in heraldic emblems, in 2004, The Royal Mint launched a new series of £1s depicting the nations using bridges. From the Forth Railway Bridge for Scotland in 2004 to the Millennium Bridge of England in 2007, this four part series celebrated Great Britain's engineering and architectural heritage. This silver proof coin, representing Wales, features the Menai Straits Bridge. The Menai Strait is a narrow 23 kilometre stretch of water which is deep and tidal. It runs between the island of Anglesey and mainland Wales. The bridge, built by Thomas Telford was opened in 1826. It was challenging to build due to the strength of the tide as well as the frequent tall ships that needed to pass beneath it. The bridge took almost seven years to construct, and was the largest suspension bridge in the world when it opened. This coin celebrates the achievement of Telford and all those who contributed to the design and construction, with an attractive design by Edwina Ellis featuring a view of the bridge with a border of railings and stanchions. Beneath the bridge, the denomination 'ONE POUND' is inscribed. Around the edge of this silver coin is a design representing bridges and pathways which is used on all four in the series. The obverse displays Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of The Queen, the fourth official portrait. This proof standard £1 is struck in .925 sterling silver and comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, along with the certificate of authenticity. 8,371 were issued in this presentation, each with a weight of 9.50 grams and a diameter of 22.50 milimetres.
