Votes for women! Founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst and her two daughters, Christabel and Sylvia, the Women’s Social and Political Union campaigned for women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom. Known as the suffragettes from 1906, the WSPU was known for their ‘deeds not words’ philosophy. The Union’s members pursued direct action to achieve their goal, including arson, breaking windows and hunger strikes when arrested. Militant suffrage campaigns ceased with the First World War, limited enfranchisement came in 1918 and equal voting rights in 1928, a decade after the WSPU was quietly dissolved. The legacy of the suffragettes is celebrated on this 2003 50p, featuring a design by Mary Milner Dickens. It shows a woman, chained to a railing, holding aloft a WSPU banner. A ballot sheet appears in front with the words ‘GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE’. The anniversary dates - 1903 and 2003 - appear below and to the side. The obverse shows the fourth official coinage portrait of her majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, introduced in 1998. This Fifty Pence piece is struck 8.00 grams of .925 sterling silver. It’s finished to proof standard with multiple strikes of specially prepared dies, offering a superior appearance compared to a regular commemorative 50p. One of 6,267 issued by The Royal Mint, this suffragettes coin is offered in its original presentation case with a certificate of authenticity.
