The son of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles was born on 14 November 1948 and was invested as Prince of Wales in 1969 when he was 21. He is currently the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history. To celebrate his 50th birthday, The Royal Mint released a series of commemorative coins, including this silver proof Five Pound. The Prince’s Trust, which acts as inspiration for this Crown was founded in 1976 in order to assist disadvantaged young people. Today, the Trust’s mission is to help young people between 11 and 30 get into jobs, education, or training. The reverse design is a collaboration between portrait painter Michael Noakes and Royal Mint engraver Robert Elderton. It depicts a portrait of Prince Charles above a ribbon reading ‘THE PRINCES TRUST. HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE TO SUCCEED.’ Behind this main feature are words relating to the positive work done by the Trust, including ‘advice,’ ‘enterprise,’ and ‘confidence.’ Around the edge, the legend spells ‘FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY OF HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES · 1948 · FIVE POUNDS · 1998.’ Adorning the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Prince Charles’ mother, The Queen. There were 13,379 £5s issued in this presentation, each weighing 28.28 grams with .925 sterling silver. It comes in its original display box with numbered certificate of authenticity.
