Each Home Nation has a national emblem from the natural world, from the oak tree of England to the thistle of Scotland. Wales is most commonly associated with the daffodil, which is worn on St David's Day. However, the Welsh national emblem is also the leek. Myths and legends abound about why the leek is the Welsh national emblem, but one story tells how St David told the Welsh to wear leeks to distinguish between ally and enemy during battles with the Saxons. Shakespeare also writes that the Welsh archers wore leeks at the Battle of Agincourt. In 1983, a new series of One Pound coins were authorised from The Royal Mint, taking inspiration from these national emblems and the stories they inspire. The series began with the Scottish coin in 1984 featuring a thistle. The following year brought this leek themed coin. It features, on the reverse, a healthy leek encircled by the Royal Diadem, designed by Leslie Durbin. Below the denomination 'ONE POUND' is transcribed. Around the edge of this silver proof coin is the inscription 'PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD' which translates to 'true I am to my country.' This design is paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse, the third official effigy of The Queen. Comprised of .925 sterling silver and with a weight of 9.50 grams, this coin is finished to proof standard giving a better quality and definition. It has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and is one of 50,000 issued. This £1 coin is presented in the original packaging from The Royal Mint, and comes with its certificate of authenticity.
