Each of the Home Nations has a particular plant that acts as an emblem and symbol, from the oak of England to the leek of Wales. In 1984 a new series of designs was issued for One Pound coins, featuring these national flora. The first design in this series was that of Scotland, featuring, on the reverse, a mighty thistle encircled by the Royal Diadem, as seen on this piedfort silver proof edition. The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III in the thirteenth century. According to legends, the thistle became important to Scotland when an invading Norseman stepped on a thistle and cried out, alerting Scots to the invasion. It was used on Scottish coins under James III and appeared regularly on currency, until 2008 when the crowned thistle 5 Pence ceased to be minted. Below the thistle on this 1984 £1 is the denomination of 'ONE POUND' while the edge carries an inscription reading 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT' or 'no-one provokes me with impunity.' While this thistle design was re-minted in 1989 with the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Her Majesty the Queen on the obverse, this original version carries Arnold Machin's effigy of The Queen; the second official portrait on circulating UK coinage. This double thickness silver proof coin has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and a weight of 19.00 grams. It is struck in .925 sterling silver is one of 15,000 issued in this presentation. It comes in its original presentation from The Royal Mint with its certificate of authenticity.
