1983 Royal Arms One Pound Piedfort Silver Proof Coin

1983 Royal Arms £1 Piedfort Silver Proof Boxed

Buy a 1983 Royal Arms One Pound Piedfort Silver Proof Coin

Over the £1 coin's lifetime, four different portraits of The Queen have been used, from the first by Arnold Machin, to the latest by Jody Clark which was introduced in 2015. This piedfort silver proof coin features Arnold Machin's portrait of Her Majesty. From 1983, it is a collectible version of the first Pound coins and one of 10,000 issued by The Royal Mint in this presentation. The One Pound coin was introduced to British currency in April 1983. It replaced the £1 note that was first printed in 1797 and was withdrawn completely in 1988. On the opposite side to the royal effigy is a design by Eric Sewell of the Royal Coat of Arms. This emblem is used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. The arms itself depicts a quartered shield featuring, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland. It is crowned with standing lion wearing the St Edward's Crown. To the left of the shield is another crowned lion, while to the right is the unicorn of Scotland. The motto banner reads 'DIEU ET MON DROIT', or 'God and my right,' while around the edge of the coin is an inscription reading 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' or 'an ornament and a safeguard.' This double thickness coin is struck in .925 sterling silver and is of proof quality. It comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, including a smart display box and acrylic casing to enjoy both sides of the coin without risking handling damage. It has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and weighs the standard 19.00 grams.
