This Crown commemorative was the first of the decimal era. Prior to decimalisation, crowns had carried the value of 5 shillings; this was changed to 25 pence after 1971. However, as the cost of metal, manufacturing, and distribution increased, the crown was changed to the higher value of £5 by 1990. The four early Twenty-Five Pence designs, including this silver proof edition celebrating the silver wedding anniversary of Elizabeth and Philip, curiously do not display their denomination inscribed as other modern coins do. Another unique feature is the lack of protective plastic capsule as the coin is displayed just in the display box. The upper, reverse side features an intricate design by Arnold Machin. The letters E, for Queen Elizabeth II, and P for Prince Philip are centred, with forget-me-not foliage encasing them. This flower represents love and respect. The small figure of Eros, God of Love, stands between the initials which are drowned with the Royal Crown. Around the rim is an inscription reading ‘ELIZABETH AND PHILIP · 20 NOVEMBER · 1947 - 1972.’ The obverse design is also by artist Arnold Machin, and features the elegant second official portrait of The Queen to be used on circulating UK coinage. A total of 100,000 of these commemorative coins were issued by The Royal Mint, each comprised of .925 sterling silver and finished to proof standard. It has a diameter of 38.61 milimetres and weighs 28.28 grams. This collectible coin comes in its original packaging with a small informational leaflet.
