Cheap pre-owned one ounce silver coins! Our best value silver 1oz Britannias are selected at random from our current stock and are guaranteed to be 99.9% fine silver. Although the Britannia bullion coin was introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987, it wouldn't be until 1997 that a silver edition (struck to proof standard) was issued. Bullion silver Britannias followed in 1998 and are now issued annually. The coin you received could have a range of dates from 2013 onwards, since issues from 1998 to 2012 are 95.83% fine silver. On the coin's reverse, the female personification of Britain is seen: Britannia. She's seen standing and facing to ther left, holding a shield and trident in a classic design by Philip Nathan. The legend around her reads: 'BRITANNIA · 1oz · 999 · FINE · SILVER ·' with the year date. This is paired with a portrait of either Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III on the obverse, alongside the face value of £2 / Two Pounds. They each weigh 31.21 grams, measure 38.61 millimetres in diameter and contain exactly one troy ounce of fine silver. Pre-owned coins such as these bullion Britannias may have some slight marks or blemishes on them, which is perfectly normal and won't affect the value of your investment. The two big bonuses with these silver coins is their CGT exempt status and the fact that VAT is only payable on our margin, making them an incredibly attractive investment margin. They're issued loose and with free delivery to UK addresses.

Britannia Coin Range

Introduced in 1987, Britannias have been a staple of the global bullion market for decades now. Their reverse design has changed over the years but always features Britannia, the female personification of the United Kingdom. She first appeared on British coins back in Roman times and now rules over her own extensive coinage range.

Britannias are today available in gold, silver and platinum as well as a variety of sizes though the specifications have changed slightly over the years. Silver Britannias minted between 1997 and 2012 were composed of 958 fine silver but this was increased to 999 fine silver from 2013 onwards. Both old and new contain the same amount of fine gold but the older have a slightly higher total weight.

Silver 1oz Britannia Designs

The first silver Britannias, issued in proof in 1997, featured a reverse designed by sculptor and medallist Philip Nathan showing Britannia driving a horse-drawn chariot, looking a lot like the legendary Celtic warrior Boadicea. The most common design seen on 1oz Britannias is another work by Nathan, referred to as the 'standing Britannia' which shows a female figure, standing against the wind with her trident, an olive branch and a Union Jack shield. It first appeared in 1998, which was the first bullion edition of the coin.

Over the years various designers have contributed reverse designs, using their own style to interpret this iconic UK figure, sometimes incorporating other national symbols like the lion or even a map of the British Isles. There are some unique reverses that are only used on proof Britannias but bullion editions feature a lot of variety too making these coins appealing to collectors as well as investors.

What Is Britannia Silver Fineness?

The purity of silver Britannia coins from The Royal Mint has been modified since these coins were introduced in 1997. Prior to 2013, they were aptly struck in Britannia silver, but are now 999 fine silver. This change was almost certainly done for export reasons since certain countries apply a different level of taxation on pure silver coins (ie. 999 fine and above).

Silver Britannias dated 1997 to 2012 are composed of 95.8% (.958) silver. From 2013 onwards, the fineness of the silver used was changed to 99.9% (.999). Regardless of the year of issue, each Britannia contains one troy ounce of pure silver.

The change in fineness explains the different sizes of Britannias one can acquire. Britannia Coins minted before 2013 have a total mass of 32.45 grams and a diameter of 40.00 millimetres. Post-2012 Britannias are lighter at 31.21 grams, measuring 38.61 millimetres.

Investing In 1oz Silver Britannias

Silver bullion Britannias are an excellent choice for investing in silver over other bullion coins. Here are some reasons why you should consider adding them to your silver stack:

  • Storing Wealth: investing in silver Britannias adds a security of a precious metals hedge to your portfolio
  • Accessible Prices: these 1oz Britannias sell for a small premium over the live price of silver making them a affordable entry point to stacking, particularly when compared to gold Britannias
  • CGT Exemptions: as UK legal currency with a pound sterling face value of £2, Britannias are capital gains tax exempt
  • Low amount of VAT: our silver Britannias are pre-owned, meaning they fall under the Margin Scheme where VAT is only payable on the margin
  • Name Recognition: Britannias have a global reputation and can be easily liquidated because all coin and metal dealers will recognise their value and purity
  • Design Changes: different reverse designs in certain years makes collecting Britannias fun, especially compared to bars or American Silver Eagles where the artwork doesn't change much
  • Potential: the industrial applications for silver are only increasing, giving a huge scope of potential price rises
