The 1980 Gold Proof Five Pounds has been graded by NGC as PF70. The gold £5 piece was originally part of a 1980 UK 4 coin gold proof sovereign set, with a maximum mintage of 10,000. The 1980 £5 is notoriously difficult to obtain in a PF70 grade, the highest attainable grade possible. The coin is made of 22 carat gold, and weighs 39.94 grams. The obverse of the coin features Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with Benedetto Pistrucci's famous portrayal of St George slaying the dragon depicted on the reverse. The 1980 gold proof five pounds was the first modern gold £5 to be issued by the Royal Mint.
