From a limited edition of just 200! Official piedfort platinum 2005 Horation Nelson coin from The Royal Mint, struck 200 years after the Battle of Trafalgar. This famous naval battle saw the Royal Navy face off against the larger combined French and Spanish fleets on 21 October 1805 off the southwestern coast of Spain. The Viscount Nelson was aboard his flagship, HMS Victory during the engagement when he was fatally wounded by a French sharpshooter. Despite his death, the lauded victory at Trafalgar cemented Nelson's place as a national hero and put a stop to the threat of a Napoleonic invasion of the United Kingdom. This 2005 Five Pound coin celebrates his legacy with a specially commissioned portrait of the legendary naval commander by British sculptor James Butler MBE RA. The unusually high-relief appearance of this modern coin recalls the stunning Crown pieces struck in the early nineteenth century. This portrait of Nelson is available on other coins issued in the two-hundredth anniversary collection but this platinum edition is based on the original plaster model produced by Butler. It's paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II which appears on the obverse. This pre-owned coin is struck in 94.20 grams of .9995 platinum with a fine proof finish, protected by the original capsule and case of issue. The numbered certificate of authenticity is also included with this scarce, stand-out piece.
