An eagerly anticipated release due out sometime soon: The 2027 Platinum Sovereign - now confirmed in a Royal Proclamation.
The document on the Privy Council website establishes that a Sovereign, Half Sovereign, Quarter Sovereign and Double Sovereign have been authorised for issue in 999.5 fine platinum, featuring the classic Saint George reverse and a portrait of King Charles III on the obverse.
The 2027 Sovereign range is an eagerly anticipated coin collection from The Royal Mint. The annual release is expected to include a range of bullion coins, individual proof coins and Sovereign sets, plus a now-confirmed Platinum Sovereign.
At the time of writing, the design for the reverse of 2027 Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns was unconfirmed. With no major royal anniversaries on the horizon, we expect the return of Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George design.
2027 Sovereigns will very likely feature Martin Jennings' definitive portrait of King Charles III on the obverse, paired with the same inscription used since Charles became King: 'CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF'.
In 2026, yellow gold made a historic return to the Sovereign range with The Royal Mint adjusting the silver-to-copper ratio in these 22-carat (916.67) gold coins. 2027 gold Sovereigns will be made from yellow gold rather than rose gold
