Taekwondo design Olympic Fifty Pence piece UK coin from 2011. This 50p is one out of a collection of twenty-nine released by the Royal Mint to commemorate the 2012 Summer Olympics being hosted in London. The designs for the set were chosen via a public competition which saw 30,000 entries. David Gibbons submitted five designs to the competition, including the chosen taekwondo design. Gibbons chose to submit a taekwondo design as it was a lesser-known sport which would require a lot of detail to get right, therefore it would be a challenge and a sport that other artists may not attempt. Spain, China, South Korea, Turkey, Great Britain, Italy, Argentina, and Serbia all took a gold medal in the Taekwondo. On the reverse of this coin is Gibbons' design; two taekwondo athletes, one facing out of the coin and one facing into the coin, both in different kicking poses unspecified by the artist. Above the athletes is the 2012 Olympic Logo, and below are the words '50 PENCE'. The obverse displays Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. The 2011 Taekwondo 50ps are struck in cupronickel alloy to standard Fifty Pence piece specifications (weight: 8.00 grams, diameter: 27.30 millimetres). 1,664,000 of these coins entered circulation. The photograph for this listing is a stock image, and coin you will receive will be in comparable condition and as it was circulated will be much like the coins you find in your change.
