Table Tennis design circulated Olympic 50p 2011. To celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics the Royal Mint released a collection of fifty pence pieces with Olympic related designs chosen from a public competition. Alan Linsdell submitted the winning Table Tennis design. Linsdell is a retired illustrator and played table tennis for twenty years in his youth, switching to badminton and then back to table tennis after experiencing heart problems. Linsdell was surprised to have won a place with his design, as he put the competition off and only drew out and submitted the design on the last day. At the 2012 Olympic Games, China dominated the Table Tennis taking all four available gold medals. The reverse shows the table tennis design submitted by Alan Linsdell: two table tennis bats held by hands and crossing over one another, a table tennis ball flying across them with two lines in its trail indicating motion. In the background is a table tennis table, above is 2012 Olympic logo, and below are the words '50 PENCE'. The obverse displays Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. The 2011 Table Tennis 50ps are struck in cupronickel alloy to standard Fifty Pence piece specifications (weight: 8.00 grams, diameter: 27.30 millimetres). 1,737,500 of these coins entered circulation. The photograph for this listing is a stock image, and coin you will receive will be in comparable condition and as it was circulated will be much like the coins you find in your change.
