At the age of just three, Prince Charles became heir apparent to the British throne, following the early death of his grandfather, George VI. Since then, he has become the longest serving heir apparent in British history, spending the majority of his life as second in line to the throne. He has made his Prince of Wales role his own during this time, taking on extensive charity work and championing important causes. Alongside founding The Princes Trust (which is celebrated on the commemorative crown released for his fiftieth birthday), the Prince also acts as patron or president for around four hundred additional charities and organisations. He took an early interest in the issue of climate change and destruction of habitats and rainforests. This Five Pound Brilliant Uncirculated coin was released by The Royal Mint to celebrate the Prince’s sixtieth birthday and comes in its original presentation sleeve which contains extra information about his charity work, and pictures from his six decades of life. The coin’s reverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of the Prince, created especially for the coin. The same artist created the effigy on the coin’s obverse of Her Majesty The Queen. This portrait has been used on coins since 1998. This £5 crown is struck in 28.28 grams and produced in the same cupro-nickel alloy as the coins in regular change. The BU finish is in a much higher quality, meaning the details are more visible and the finish shinier. The Royal Mint issued 54,746 coins in this presentation.
