Attractive, high-grade George IV silver Halfcrown, dated 1821. Obverse: elaborate first laureate head by Benedetto Pistrucci showing the King facing left with ribbons at his neck. Legend: 'GEORGIUS III D:G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:'. The artist's initials - 'B.P.' - appear below the truncation. Reverse features lightly garnished shield bearing the royal arms of the United Kingdom with those of the House of Hanover in the centre, surmounted by a large crown. Large national flower emblems including a thistle, shamrocks and a rose around with 'ANNO 1821' to either side of rose below. Engraver: Jean Baptiste Merlen. Borders toothed and edge milled. George IV came to the throne in 1820, having acted as his father, King George III's regent since 1811. This Halfcrown was struck in the younger George's coronation year. The portrait and reverse used here were replaced from 1823 making this appealing design fairly rare. Annual mintage for 1821: 1,435,100. Weight: 14.15 grams. Diameter: 32.2 millimetres. Grade: EF - Light attractive tone, no real issues reverse better than Extremely Fine. References: ESC 631, S 3807.
