Buy a 1818 Crown LIX

1818 silver Crown with 'LIX' regnal year to the edge in raised Roman numerals. Issued late in the reign of King George III, this desirable 1818-dated coin features the large laureate head of the King, ostentatiously signed 'PISTRUCCI' by the engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci. The reverse displays the same artist's iconic Saint George and the dragon design: one of the most famous designs in numismatic history. Records indicate that just 155,323 of these silver coins were struck in the calendar year 1818, and as the first Crown issued since the reign of George II, these pieces remain highly sought after by collectors of historic British coins.
Grade: EF - a light tone with reverse slightly darker with some colour, very first signs of wear Extremely Fine

Portrait Of King George III

Benedetto Pistrucci designed the laureate head portrait of King George III that is shown on the obverse of this 1818 Crown. The date is shown below, and the inscription reads 'GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIARUM REX F: D:'.

Classic Saint George Reverse

The same artist also created the instantly recognisable image of Saint George on a rearing horse, pointing his sword at a dragon. This classic motif is surrounded by a garter which reads 'HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE'.

LIX Raised Edge Inscription

1818 coins feature the regnal year on the edge as part of a Latin inscription that reads 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI LIX', which indicates that this coin was struck in the 59th year of George III's reign.

Struck In Sterling Silver

These 37.6 millimetre coins are struck in solid .925 sterling silver and weigh around 28.28 grams. They were minted in London at the Royal Mint's Tower Hill premises.

Mintage Figures For 1818 Crowns

In 1818, the Royal Mint struck just 155,232 silver Crown coins, though this figure incorporates both LIX and LVIII edge variant coins. Only a limited number of these Crowns will have survived in good condition.

Buying Historic British Coins

This is a highly collectable historic British coin, originally struck as currency. As such, it will display signs of wear, as well as marks and toning commensurate with the age and grade.
