Small 1897 Royal Mint gold medal issued to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Victoria became Queen in 1867 and, towards the end of her long reign, became the first British monarch to celebrate six decades on the throne. Many medals were struck to mark the occasion, but these official Royal Mint medals are certainly the most sought after and the most beautiful. Designed by George William de Saulles, after portraits by William Wyon and Thomas Brock, this 22-carat gold medal features youthful and mature portraits of the Queen, modelled from her coinage effigies. This piece is the smaller, 26-millimetre gold edition, and it is supplied in the original red leather presentation case from the Mint, inscribed in gold on the lid.
Grade: VF - Very Fine with some reddish discoloration to the edges

Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medals

When Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, a wide range of souvenirs were produced for the occasion, taking advantage of new mass manufacturing technology. Popular mementoes included mugs, plates and commemorative medals.

Young Head 1837 Effigy

This medal displays a youthful Victoria based on William Wyon's early coin effigy, framed by a laurel branch. Around the design appears the Latin inscription 'LONGITVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA' with '1837' below, the year Victoria became Queen.

1897 Widowed Head Portrait

The reverse, engraved, like the obverse, by George William de Saulles, takes inspiration from Sir Thomas Brock's Widowed Head portrait. The legend reads 'VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN · MDCCCXCVII ·'.

Official Royal Mint Gold Medal

While countless medallions were created for the Jubilee, this small official Royal Mint issue - struck in 22-carat gold and measuring 26 millimetres - is regarded as one of the most desirable examples made for the occasion.

Historic Medal In Original Box

This historic British medal is supplied with its original red leather box of issue from the Royal Mint, lined with silk and blue velvet, the lid inscribed in gold with a royal crown and the Diamond Jubilee dates: '1837-1897'.
