PF 70 Ultra Cameo graded 1985 Double Sovereign, the first to feature Rapahel Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This was the third definitive effigy of Her Majesty the Queen used on her coinage. Designs by five different artists were commissioned for UK currency between her accession in 1953 and her passing in 2022. Maklouf's elegant portrait shows The Queen facing right and wearing the Diamond Diadem. The reverse features the classic St George and the dragon motif, created for the first modern Sovereigns, issued during the reign of King George III. The work of Italian artist Benedetto Pistucci, this interpretation of the central legend associated with England's patron saint has been a perennial feature on these coins down the decades. The engraver's initials appear below the beast, to the right of the date. Like all gold Double Sovereigns, this one is struck in 15.98 grams of 22-carat (91.67% pure) gold. That's an actual gold weight of 14.65 grams or 0.4708 troy ounces. The coin measures 28.40 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge. It would once have been part of a 1985 proof Sovereign set of which 5,849 were issued by The Royal Mint. These coins were only reintroduced as an annual issued in 1980. The Numismatic Guaranty Company holder protects the flawless proof finish, achieved with multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies and allows the owner to appreciate both sides of this attractive, collectable gold coin.
