22-carat gold Rhodesian 1966 Five Pound coin graded PF 66 by NGC. Obverse: Arnold Machin’s second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The legend reads: ‘ELIZABETH THE SECOND’. Reverse: coat of arms of Rhodesia with pickaxe on shield and two sable antelopes as supporters, as used between 1924 and 1981 firstly for the British colony and later for Zimbabwe. The date (1966) appears either side with ‘RHODESIA’ above and ‘FIVE POUNDS’ below. Designer: Thomas Sasseen. These coins were produced by the South African Mint for the new Rhodesian national bank, not long after the white separatist minority government had declared independence in November 1965. Following a 15-year guerrilla war, Rhodesia would emerge as the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980. This Five Pound coin was originally part of a 1966 gold proof set, one of 5,000 issued during this significant year in the history of Zimbabwe. It has the same specifications as a British Five Sovereign, weighing in at 39.94 grams and composed of 91.67% gold (actual gold weight: 1.1762 troy ounces). Diameter: 36.02 millimetres. This example has been graded PF 66 by the Numismatic Guaranty Company. It comes sealed in its standard brown label holder. Certificate number: 6492401-009 (may not match item pictured).
