Gold proof 1937 Sovereign, graded PF 66 by NGC. These were the only Sovereigns issued during the reign of King George VI and remain a key issue for any collector of these British gold coins. They were originally issued as part of gold 4-coin sets, struck to celebrate George VI's coronation. He came to the throne following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII in 1936. By the interwar years, gold Sovereigns had fallen out of circulation in Britain. 5,001 sets issued in 1937, minted for collectors with a 'specimen' or proof finish. This piece retains its high-shine appearance, setting off the distinctive left-facing portrait of The King by Humphrey Paget. The artist had produced the portrait of George's brother, prepared for coinage before his abdication. The reverse features the classic St George and the dragon motif, created in 1817 by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci. This 1937 22ct gold coin has been graded PF 66 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and comes sealed in its holder. NGC Cert. # 6488019-001. References: S 4076.
