22-carat gold proof Battle of Waterloo commemorative coin from The Royal Mint, from a limited edition of just 500! 2015 marked 200 years since the Battle of Waterloo. Fought on 18 June 1815 in what is today Belgium, the battle ended the Napoleonic Wars, which had ravaged Europe. A near-won allied victory was secured by the Duke of Wellington at the head of a British coalition and Marshal Blücher leading the Prussian army. On this coin, the two leaders are shown shaking hands on the battlefield following their defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. The aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo saw the map of Europe redrawn and the beginning of a period of British peace and prosperity known as the Pax Britannica. This coin features Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverse, though some editions of this coin, found in sets, use Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy.
