Graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo this First Releases NGC coin is a limited edition plain edge proof variant of the 2021 Gothic Quartered Arms in 62.42 grams of 999.9 gold. From a small mintage of 125, this 40.00 millimetre, £200 coin is struck to flawless proof standard. The third release in The Royal Mint's groundbreaking Great Engravers series, this coin features a royal arms design that first appeared on the reverse of the 1847 silver Crown. Engraved by the renown William Wyon in collaboration with Scottish artist, William Dyce, the intricate, medieval-inspired detail led to this scarce piece becoming known as the Gothic Crown. The first of a two part release, this coin pairs the historic reverse design with Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. Wyon's Gothic portrait of Queen Victoria will be reissued in early 2022. This example differs from the rest of the collection in that it features a smooth plain edge, rather than a milled edge. It’s the only denomination available with this feature in an already sought after issue.

Plain edge proof 2 oz gold proof Gothic Quartered Arms from a limited mintage of just 125: graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo by NGC.

The Great Engravers

Billed as a celebration of historic coinage design, The Royal Mint's Great Engravers range has proved hugely popular.

The series kicked off with Una and the Lion: recreating an engraving by Royal Mint Chief Engraver, William Wyon, first used in 1839 celebrate Queen Victoria's coronation. The limited edition 2019 reissue offered buyers a chance to own a sought-after design in a range of metals and denominations, including the largest gold coin the Mint had ever offered to that point.

An earlier design by Wyon - his Three Graces - was the subject of the second instalment in the Great Engravers series. Originally crafted for an 1817 pattern coin, the success of the remastered 2020 Three Graces inspired similar offers from the East India Company and the Commonwealth Mint as well as much speculation about the next release.

1847 Gothic Crown

We were excited to learn that The Royal Mint would be focusing on the Gothic Crown for their third Great Engravers collection.

This Victorian coin got its name from its intricate, medieval-style details. Working from a design by Scottish artist, William Dyce, William Wyon engraved an ornate crowned portrait and a quartered arms motif utilising a very different art style to his earlier masterpieces. Only a small number were issued, mostly to collectors, though the design was later used on other coins, including the infamous Godless Florin.

As well as its Gothic Revival style, the Gothic Crown is different from previous designs offered in the Great Engravers series in that both sides of the original coin are admired by numismatists. To create legal tender coins, The Royal Mint has chosen to strike the 1847 coin's obverse and reverse separately, both paired with Jody Clark's portrait of Elizabeth II.

Plain Edge Proof

Working from the original designs, the Royal Mint's current Chief Engraver, Gordon Summers, has breathed new life into this historic masterpiece. Most original Gothic Crowns were struck in silver so its remarkable to see this design, struck to proof standard on a 62.42 gram 999.9 gold coin.

This variant boasts a plain edge, differing from the milled detail of the rest of the coins in this collection.

This plain edge 2 oz gold coin is from a highly limited mintage of just 125 pieces.

This rare example has been graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company. It's also been given an additional First Releases designation. You will recieve your plain edge Gothic Crown in its NGC holder. Please note that the certificate number in the images may not match the coin you receive though the grade will be the same.
