2021 is the year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac. Celebrate with this one kilo gold coin from The Royal Mint’s Lunar or Shēngxiào series, now in its eighth year, which depicts animals of the zodiac cycle with a uniquely British twist. Harry Brockway’s Ox, shown on the reverse of this 1,005 gram coin was inspired by 18th century paintings and the traits of strength, diligence and dependability that those born in this year are said to embody. This design is paired with Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. With a face value of £1,000, this collector’s piece is struck to proof standard. It’s one of only eight issued and comes in its original box from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

A one-kilogram gold proof coin, celebrating the Year of the Ox from The Royal Mint’s Lunar series.

The Shēngxiào Collection

The Lunar or Shēngxiào collection is a twelve-year series from The Royal Mint, charting the cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Now in its eighth year, coins in this collection feature the animals associated with the lunar calendar, often with a distinctly British twist.

Released annually on Chinese New Year in gold, silver, proof and bullion editions, the series so far includes:

While these coins share a fascinating theme with similar Chinese and Australian series, The Royal Mint’s Shēngxiào coins are unique as legal tender in the UK.

2021: The Year of the Ox

The reverse of the Year of the Ox Lunar coin is the work of British artist, Harry Brockway, who is also responsible for the 2019 Year of the Pig collection. He drew on eighteenth-century paintings of prize cattle and encounters with oxen when travelling in East Asia to create his design. Speaking of his gazing ox motif Brockway said:

‘The finished design retains the impressive bulk of the animals in the paintings yet also depicts the ox as a peaceful creature – strong and powerful but not aggressive in any way.’

Brockway’s Ox is accompanied by Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the reverse which also displays the face value of this coin: £1,000.

Lucky Number Eight

Only eight of these gold 1 kg coins have been offered by The Royal Mint. This a is a nod to the Chinese lucky number which has been a hallmark of presentation numbers in the Lunar series. In Cantonese the word for eight sounds a lot like those for ‘prosper’ and ‘wealth’.

This 1,005 gram 999 fine gold coin is struck to proof standard, ensuring a flawless finish. The 100.00 millimetre diameter means you can appreciate the elegant and symbolic design as intended.

You 2021 Year of the Ox gold proof kilo coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with its numbered certificate of authenticity.
