Piedfort Decimal Day Fifty Pence graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo. On 15 February 1971, the UK formally decimalised its currency, overturning a centuries old system in which the pound was made up of 20 shillings or 240 pence. Decimal Day was a major success for The Royal Mint, taking years of planning and the establishment of a new factory in Llantrisant, Wales. Fifty Years on in 2021, the Mint celebrated with a range of commemorative Fifty Pence pieces, issued to mark the occasion. These coins feature Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse, in use since 2015. This is paired with a nostalgic reverse by graphic designer, Dominique Evans. Her creation takes inspiration from the designs of the old coins that were removed from circulation after 1971. A wren, the masts of the Golden Hind and the head of Britannia are instantly recognisable. This double-weight piedfort proof edition is struck in 31.00 grams of 22 carat gold. It’s twice the thickness of an ordinary 50p but otherwise has the same dimensions. Only 200 of these gold proof coins were offered and this one has been graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation indicating a flawless coin with high contrast between fields and devices.
