From a limited edition presentation of just 225 coins, this gold proof UK Two Pound marks 350 years since Samuel Pepys made his final entry in his famous diary, reflecting on his failing sight. Gary Breeze’s design for this Two Pound coin captures this moment. It features a hand signing ‘Samuel Pepys’ on a piece of parchment with the anniversary dates (1669 - 2019) below. The edge includes a line from this last entry: ‘THE GOOD GOD PREPARE ME’. Pepys was a naval administrator and Member of Parliament who documented his life in the decade after the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. First published in the 19th century, his diaries are among the most important sources on London in the 1660s and cover major events like the 1666 Great Fire of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Plague from an eyewitness perspective. Breeze’s design is paired with Jody Clark’s fifth definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as used between 2015 and her passion in 2022. This 91.67% gold £2 coin weights 15.97 grams and features a red gold rim and a yellow gold inner circle, imitating the appearance of bimetallic circulating coinage. It’s struck to finest proof standard and has a surface that measures 28.40 millimetres in diameter. We’ll supply this 2019 Samuel Pepys coin in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with an information booklet and a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
