The sixth release in The Royal Mint's Shēngxiào lunar collection is the 2019 Year of the Pig, which this edition being the 1/10 ounce gold BU coin. This 12-year series charts the cycle of the Chinese zodiac with collectable coins inspired by the animal signs and their attributes. The series began in 2014 and has featured designs that combine Chinese artistic motifs with British ones, with these Year of the Pig coins no different. The reverse design, created by Harry Brockway, shows five piglets feeding from their sow. Family is important to those born under the sign of the pig and five is said to be a lucky number in Chinese culture. It's a nighttime scene, the stars above referencing the zodiac, shining on an English country cottage, surrounded by hydrangeas plants, which is another symbol of good fortune. Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse, alongside the face value of £10 / Ten Pounds. These tenth ounce UK coins are unique to the Year of the Pig collection in that they're the only gold coin struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish. During production, they're stuck twice to give a crisper finish, which is superior to bullion coins. Specifications are a weight of 3.11 grams, a diameter of 16.50 millimetres and a fineness of 0.9999 (24 carat). Just 1,088 of these gold Lunar coins were authorised in this limited edition presentation, with the selection of the '8' numerals a deliberate act made for good luck. Issued in the original Royal Mint presentation box, with free UK delivery.
