From a limited edition of just 400, this 1oz gold coin is the fifth proof release in the sought-after Queen’s Beasts series. The falcon is a beast associated with the House of York, particularly Plantagenet King Edward IV who claimed his throne during the Wars of the Roses. It’s his badge, showing a Falcon perched atop a fetterlock - a kind of shackle - that appears on this Queen’s Beasts coin. Hunting with birds of prey was an elite sport in medieval England, so choosing this beast as a personal emblem suggested nobility and prowess. The falcon, wings outstretched, clutches Edward IV’s badge with its talons in this design, its head dividing the date. Like all the beasts in this series, the falcon of the Plantagenets is the work of Royal Mint designer, Jody Clark. He has the unusual distinction of his work featuring on both sides of these coins as he is also the artist behind the fifth official effigy of Her Majesty the Queen, introduced in 2015. This edition has a face value of £100 and is struck in 31.21 grams of 999.9 fine gold. Finished to proof standard it has a diameter of 32.69 millimetres and is offered in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Limited edition 1oz gold proof Falcon of the Plantagenets Queen's Beasts coin.

The Queen's Beasts

New coins in the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts collection have been flying off the shelves since the first design was revealed in 2016. Coins in the series, including this one ounce gold proof example combine lifelike animals with graphic heraldic elements in designs by Royal Mint artist Jody Clark.

The series was inspired by ten statues – crafted by sculptor James Woodford – that stood guard during the Queen's 1953 coronation. Featuring the real and mythological beasts that appear on the coats of arms of British royal houses, the Queen's Beasts symbolise Her Majesty's noble lineage.

Falcon of the Plantagenets

In medieval times, hunting with birds of prey like falcons was a sport for elites. Choosing a falcon as an emblem suggested that bearer possessed nobility and prowess as well as the attributes of a falcon: determination and a keen eye. The beast is shown with its wings outstretched on this coin.

The falcon's talons clutch the badge of Plantagenets King, Edward IV, who claimed his throne during the wars of the roses. His shield shows a falcon perched atop a fetterlock which is a type of shackle. Edward’s distant descendant, Elizabeth II, appears on the obverse of this Queen's Beasts coin.

One Ounce Gold Coin

This Falcon of the Plantagenets coin is struck in 31.21 grams of 999.9 fine gold with a 32.69 millimetre diameter. It’s finished to flawless proof standard. Intended for collectors, proof coins show more detail than their bullion counterparts thanks to multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies.

The finish is preserved by the original capsule, case and box that this Queen's Beasts coin was issued in. Also enclosed is a numbered certificate of authenticity which confirms that this 1oz gold edition is from a highly limited presentation of just 400 pieces.
