Gold bullion one oz 2018 Britannia with special border design. The reverse of this coin features Philip Nathan’s classic ‘standing Britannia’, in use since 1998. His design emphasises maritime themes. The helmeted female figure holds a trident - a symbol of British naval power - and stands on a windswept cliff-top, her dress billowing. The shield and laurel sprig she clutches in her left hand balance this show of martial strength. These coins are differentiated from ordinary gold bullion Britannias with a distinctive meander or guilloché border with a repeating oriental pattern, inspired by Chinese-themed rooms at Brighton Pavilion and Buckingham Palace. This design feature was authorised to celebrate The Royal Mint expanding their business into Asia. Just 5,000 of these gold one ounce oriental border Britannias were authorised in 2018 adding an element of collectibility to their excellent credentials of Britannias as bullion coins. Like all gold 1 oz Britannias, this limited edition variety is composed of 31.103 grams of 999.9 gold. The coin has a 32.60 millimetre diameter, a bullion finish and is free from CGT and VAT. Your oriental border Britannia is provided loose though we’ll carefully package this coin for shipping which is free in the UK.

Britannia Bullion Coins

The personification of the United Kingdom, Britannia, first appeared on Roman coins, struck during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. Her image was revived for the coinage of Charles II. Since then, she's been a feature on the coins of every British monarch, a powerful symbol of national identity.

Depicted as a warlike goddess, Britannia has starred on her own range of bullion coins since 1987. Initially these coins were just available in gold, with silver and platinum editions issued later, the specifications varying a little over the years. Coins are available individually, in sets and in both proof and bullion finishes.

Britannias offer a variety of benefits for investors but new annual designs by respected artists offer an element of collectibility.

Oriental Border Britannia

The reverse of this 2018 bullion Britannia shows Philip Nathan's classic standing Britannia, the date below and the composition to the left of her trident: 'ONE OUNCE 999.9 FINE GOLD', 'BRITANNIA' vertically to the other side.

What makes this issue distinctive is the repeating guilloché or meander border to the edge of the reverse. Intended to evoke classic oriental design, the motif was inspired by Chinese-themed rooms at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton and Buckingham Palace. It was authorised to celebrate The Royal Mint’s move into the Asian market.

The obverse shows Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen with the inscription: 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 100 POUNDS ·'.
