This 1/40oz coin features a one-year-only reverse design by Suzie Zamit showing Britannia holding a trident, the English lion at her heel. The date (2016) is shown below with 'BRITANNIA 1/40oz FINE GOLD 999.9' above.
The obverse of 2016 gold proof fortieth-ounce Britannias displays Jody Clark's fifth and final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, together with an inscription that reads 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE ·'.
These fractional gold proof coins are struck in 0.80 grams of solid 24-carat (999.9) gold and measure just 8.00 millimetres in diameter, measured from milled edge to milled edge. The production of these coins is a remarkable technical feat.
When these fortieth-ounce coins went on sale, they were advertised as part of a limited presentation of just 2,250, but records show that only 1,447 were actually released in this presentation, with further coins included in proof sets.
This pre-owned coin is supplied with the original, individually numbered card from The Royal Mint, which folds out to reveal information about the Britannia series. The built-in capsule protects this tiny coin from loss and damage.
