Graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo! 22-carat gold proof 2014 Two Pound coin from The Royal Mint, commemorating 100 years since Britain entered the First World War. The inscription around the edge of this coin reads ‘THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT ALL OVER EUROPE’, a quote from Foreign Secretary Edward Grey on the outbreak of war, hinting at the dark times that were to come. Initially, recruitment to the armed forces was voluntary with patriotic advertising campaigns strongly encouraging young men to join up. The most famous enlistment poster of the era is undoubtedly the work of British graphic artist Alfred Leete. His ‘Lord Kitchener Wants You’ design features Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, the Secretary of State for War, pointing directly at the viewer. Leete's illustration originally appeared in the London Opinion magazine and was later adapted into a poster bearing the important words: ‘YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU’. It is this design that artist John Bergdahl used as inspiration for the reverse of this Two Pound coin. Bergdahl stated that he wanted to capture the spirit that gripped the nation at the time, one of enthusiasm and patriotism, while not glorifying war and the suffering it brought to families across the world. Around the edge of Bergdahl’s Kitchener design is the legend ‘THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-1918 2014’. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Just 751 of these 15.98 gram 916.7 gold proof £2 coins were issued by The Royal Mint. This example has been graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and comes sealed in its holder. Great British design in excellent grade.
