The Royal Mint has marked many milestones for Queen Elizabeth II; in 2006 they celebrated her 80th birthday with a selection of commemorative Five Pound coins, including this gold proof edition. Born in April 1926, Elizabeth II became heir presumptive in 1936 when King Edward VIII abdicated and came to the throne at the age of 25 in 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI. In her ninth decade, Her Majesty became the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch in history. This Crown features a trio of fanfare or herald trumpets with ceremonial banners, bearing the royal arms. Designed by Danuta Solowiej-Wedderburn, the legend reads 'VIVAT REGINA' which translates to 'Long live the Queen', in a nod to the royal birthday. Around the edge is transcribed 'DUTY SERVICE FAITH,' recognising her position as Head of the Church of England, as well as the role she plays in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. Wedderburn's design is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the monarch herself, which was her fourth official UK coin portrait, used between 1998 and 2015. Dimensions are a total weight of 39.94 grams and a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. A total of 2,750 gold proof coins were issued by The Royal Mint in this presentation. They are struck using highly polished dies in 22 carat gold to give a top-quality proof finish. As standard, you'll receive the original presentation box and certificate including an informative booklet about the Queen's life.
