The UK's national mint issued just 75,264 uncirculated bullion Sovereigns in this year, each with a special, one-off reverse to celebrate 50 years since the Queen's accession to the throne. Timothy Noad's crowned shield of arms design was inspired by Victorian Sovereigns and replaces the traditional Saint George and the dragon motif, used on most 21st-century British Sovereigns. The obverse of this 2002 coin bears Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Each is struck in 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold, continuing the historic Sovereign specification that has been used since 1817.

The reverse features Timothy Noad's special Golden Jubilee shield design, with the date (2002) below. This is one of just a handful of times that the St George reverse has been replaced in the Sovereign series.
Each 2002 Sovereign contains 0.2354 troy ounces of pure gold, being struck in 22-carat (91.67%) gold with a diameter of 22.05 millimetres and a bright uncirculated bullion finish.
Records confirm that 75,264 bullion Sovereigns were struck in this year, with a significantly smaller number of 2002 proof Sovereigns also minted for collectors.
