Royal Mint Alderney 22-carat gold 2002 piedfort Five Pound coin, struck to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Here in the UK we marked 50 years since Elizabeth II came to the throne with public events in London, a banquet for global heads of state and thousands of street parties held up and down the county. A wide range of monuments and souvenirs were commissioned, including a collection of Crown coins, issued by The Royal Mint. This coin was struck by the Mint on behalf of Alderney, the northernmost of the inhabited Channel Islands and part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Alderney has the same currency as the UK but you'll note the Crown Dependencies's name to the obverse which bears a portrait of The Queen by Raphael Maklouf. The reverse features a design by Marcel Canioni, showing the sword of state against a section of the royal coat of arms, the three lions of England featuring prominently. It's a striking design, set off attractively by the fine proof finish. This coin is twice the thickness of a standard gold proof Five Pound, weighing in at 79.88 grams . It's composed of 22-carat (916.7) gold (actual gold weight: 73.23 grams / 2.3543 troy ounces) and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. Piedfort coins like this one are prestigious rarities: just 100 of these Golden Jubilee coins were issued by The Royal Mint. This example comes in its original velvet case and box with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
