NGC graded 2001 quarter ounce gold proof Britannia with special lion design. Britannias are The Royal Mint’s premier investment coins. Introduced in 1987, they get their name from Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles. She first appeared on our coinage in Roman times and was revived as a motif centuries later, gracing the money of King Charles II. In Victorian times she became a defender of our coasts, often shown holding Poseidon’s trident. That’s how she’s depicted in the classic ‘standing Britannia’ design by Philip Nathan that graces the majority of these modern coins. An alternate design - also by Nathan - features on 2001 editions. Here she’s accompanied by a lion, used as a heraldic symbol of England since the middle ages. The design is an ode to a rare and famous British coin, known as Una and the Lion, struck in 1839. The text here is verticle with ‘QUARTER OUNCE FINE GOLD’ to the left and ‘BRITANNIA 2001’ to the right. It’s a stylised, graphic design, very different from Nathan’s other Britannia. The obverse of this coin shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the face value: £25. These proof-finish 1/4oz Britannias are struck in 8.51 grams of 916.7 (22-carat) gold. Actual gold weight: 7.78 grams. Diameter: 22.00 millimetres. The gold content of these coins means we’re able to offer them without VAT and their status as UK legal tender provides a Capital Gains Tax exemption. This example has been graded a flawless PF 70 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and comes sealed in its NGC holder.
