1996 three coin gold proof Sovereign set: limited edition Royal Mint issue with Double Sovereign, Sovereign and Half Sovereign and annual medal. One of 1,250 sets authorised by the UK's national mint, with 868 reportedly issued. Other 1990s Sovereign sets include a Two Pound coin with a one-off commemorative reverse design. For 1996 the Double Sovereign features the classic Saint George and the dragon motif, as do the 'full' Sovereign and Half Sovereign. This motif was created for the first modern Sovereigns, struck in 1817, and is the work of Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. It's been a perennial presence on these prestigious gold coins from the last two centuries. Pistrucci's reverse is paired with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, the third of five definitive effigies utilised across Her Majesty's UK coinage. These Sovereigns are technically UK legal tender currency so they are exempt from Capital Gains Tax. As investment gold they are also VAT free. Between the coins in this 1996 set there are 27.95 grams of 22-carat (916.7) fine gold. That's an actual gold weight of 25.62 grams or 0.8237 troy ounces. You'll received the three proof coins in their original red leather presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
